Michael Williams, a candidate in the District 1 Surprise City Council race withdrew after county election officials learned he did not collect enough valid signatures to have his name on the ballot.
This is the first time in Surprise’s history a candidate had to withdraw from the race because he or she did not have enough signatures, said City Clerk Sherry Aguilar.
Williams’ name will not appear on the Aug. 27 primary ballot.
“I put the blame on myself,” Williams said of the invalid signatures. “I should have given myself more time.”
