Opponents of expanding Medicaid, Arizona’s health-insurance program for the poor, filed paperwork with the Secretary of State’s Office this morning to refer the new law to the November 2014 ballot.
Gov. Jan Brewer signed the Medicaid expansion legislation Monday, flanked by members of the bipartisan coalition that helped push it through the Legislature last week. But opponents of the law vowed weeks ago to launch a petition drive to stop it.
The filing marks the latest chapter in a bitter battle that could end up in the courts.
The group, United Republican Alliance of Principled Conservatives, has until Sept. 11 to collect 86,405 valid signatures from registered Arizona voters to put Medicaid expansion on the ballot. Just gathering enough signatures will put the law on hold until the 2014 election.
