Growing, possessing and using marijuana could become legal for anyone in Arizona, regardless of medical need, if a group calling itself “Safer Arizona” is successful in its new legalization initiative.
The initiative will be put on the 2014 ballot if the organizers can gather 259,213 valid Arizona signatures by July 3, 2014.
Robert Clarke, one of the initiative organizers, said he and the other main organizer looked at similar initiatives that passed in Colorado and Washington in 2012 and made adjustments using feedback from supporters
Clarke said he believes there is enough grassroots momentum to get the signatures they need, and that recent polls indicate there’s support to pass it.
“The numbers are on our side,” Clarke said. “More than 50 percent of people support full legalization.”
Volunteers in Tucson, Scottsdale, Phoenix, Flagstaff, Show Low and Kingman are preparing to help, Clarke said.
Clarke said there were initial conversations about outside support from groups that have helped pass medical marijuana laws and decriminalization laws in other states. But no formal agreements have been reached.
