The future of the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts is in question after the City Council rejected a proposal Tuesday to give $350,000 to the non-profit group that operates the center.
The proposed one-time payments of $200,000 this month and $150,000 after July 1 were intended to help Theater Works balance its budget after increased operating expenses and decreased revenues put the group in financial straits.
Council members expressed several concerns, including financially supporting the theater while residents are struggling, a lack of a checks and balances, and paying now could lead to more payments.
Others said the financial assistance was crucial to sustain the arts center and revitalize downtown Peoria.
The proposal was shot down by a 4-3 vote. Mayor Bob Barrett, Councilwoman Cathy Carlat and Councilman Bill Patena voted in favor.
