Presidential climate change plan could have big impacts in Arizona

President Barack Obama released plans today to deal with climate change from a U.S. perspective, and not unsurprisingly there were happy folks on one side of the issue and unhappy folks on the other side.

For Arizona, there are a couple of issues at play.

First, we’re a coal-dominant state. The plan calls for regulating carbon dioxide emissions from existing plants and ratcheting them down for new proposed plants. That’s bad news for coal plants that power a lot of the state, including the Central Arizona Project that brings water to Phoenix.

Salt River Project, which operates the Navajo Generating Station near Page, already says it is looking at a $1.1 billion bill to clean up non-carbon dioxide particles from the plant under a proposal by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Arizona Public Service Co. is just a little further behind on those regulations on three power plants it operates.
