With County Manager Fritz Behring leaving Pinal County at the end of the month, the Board of Supervisors must decide how it wants to conduct a search for his replacement.
On May 22, Behring was named Scottsdale’s next city manager in a 7-0 vote by its city council.
Behring has been lauded by many for his fiscal conservatism and leadership
skills during his tenure in Pinal County, which began in November 2010.
On Wednesday, the Board of Supervisors briefly discussed the recruitment strategy.
CPS HR Consulting, The Novak Company, The Mercer Group and McMurray & Associates are the four consulting firms the county will send a request for proposal, or RFP. When the board gets quotes and other information from each company, it will decide which one will conduct the search.
CPS HR Consulting is the company the county used to hire Behring, who came from Clay County, Fla.
The cost to use CPS HR Consulting in 2010 was $23,000, said Birdie DeNero, human resources director for the county.
Supervisor Pete Rios of Dudleyville said the cost was reduced during that search because the county “piggy- backed” onto a search by the city of Peoria, which was looking for a city manager at the same time.
Board Vice Chairman Anthony Smith of Maricopa asked if the agenda item allowed for discussion regarding an interim county manager, but Chairman Steve Miller of Casa Grande said there wasn’t any language in the agenda item that would allow for such a discussion.
Supervisor Cheryl Chase of San Tan Valley wanted to talk about naming an interim, even if the board didn’t take action during that session. There was no discussion on an interim manager.
