The Gilbert Town Council is considering allowing the public to carry deadly weapons, including guns, into town buildings and events after two conservative councilmen last week voiced support for the proposal.
Gilbert prohibits the carrying of weapons into government buildings, but Town Hall and most other municipal offices are not equipped with metal detectors or any screening system. An armed police officer is present for Town Council meetings.
Gilbert’s gun restrictions are essentially based on an “honor system” because visitors are not proactively asked to check weapons at the door, officials said.
Such gun-free zones without meaningful enforcement only “make good people less safe” and are likely to be ignored by a person who intends to hurt somebody, Councilman Victor Petersen said.
