The finishing touches are being put on the first draft of Tempe’s General Plan 2040, a guide for the city’s growth and development for the next 30 years that is expected to be unveiled next month.
The draft is the culmination of about six months of study by Tempe’s General Plan 2040 Community Working Group, which includes 24 residents with expertise in areas such as architecture, transportation, business development and neighborhood preservation.
The plan is a map for how the city looks at development, land use, sustainability, transportation, economic development, historic preservation, neighborhood enhancement, open space, public art, cultural amenities and human services.
“The general plan is referred to for zoning requests, for building permits for development decisions and when designing roads, parks, paths and public facilities,” said Nancy Ryan, a Tempe Community Development manager, in a video the city produced to encourage residents’ participation in creating the General Plan vision.
