It was quite a historic week at the Supreme Court, with rulings that turned back certain reforms of the 60s, yet paved the way for other societal transformations in the future.

The court found the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional and cleared the aisle for same-sex marriage in California, ergo other states.

One of the best television reporters at the court is Pete Williams of NBC. Your editor worked for years in radio with Pete in Wyoming. Pete had a secret and intended to keep it.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper recently decided of his own free will to announce he’s gay. Other celebrities have and will continue to reveal their sexual identities.

My friend Pete was ambushed several years ago by his own people: A publication called Queer Nation “outed” Pete while he was a spokesman for the Department of Defense during the Persian Gulf war. The unwashed demanded Williams resign, but he rejected the idea. (Pete worked for Dick Cheney when he was a Wyoming congressman and later secretary of defense. Cheney has a lesbian daughter.)

Who opens the closet door is only up to the person inside.
