Arizona Senate leader says Medicaid fight not over

Arizona’s Republican Senate President sees fallout for the GOP in the 2014 legislative elections over recent passage of the state’s Medicaid expansion.

The move, which eventually will add 57,000 residents to the program, was opposed by conservative Republicans in the legislature but won approval with a coalition of Democrats and some Republicans backing the plan put forth by Republican Gov. Jan Brewer.

Dist. 12 Sen. Andy Biggs (R-Gilbert), who opposed the measure, told a Sun City West audience a few weeks ago that he warned the governor approval of the bill that enacts a key portion of President Obama’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, would result in conservative Republicans staying home during the 2014 contests.
