Avondale replaces blighted apartments with new homes

As part of its effort to revitalize Historic Avondale, the city has taken control of some troubled apartments, razed them and built new houses.

When the $1 million project is completed, Legacy Avondale will have six modern, single-family homes that city officials hope to sell to families. A similar project with six more houses is being considered on a neighboring property.

The federally funded project is designed with the needs of neighborhood and future homeowners in mind, city officials say.

The homes on the south side of the 300 block of East Hill Drive were intended to be modern and colorful and to attract attention and spark interest in the homes, said Ernesto Fonseca, Avondale’s revitalization manager.
