Building codes protect health, safety of public

There has been a great deal written and said about the pending adoption of new building codes by cities across our state and nation. Unfortunately, much of it has been misunderstood and flatly inaccurate.

There is nothing sinister about building codes. They are mentioned in the Bible and have been written into law as far back as Hammurabi.

Yet architects, engineers and contractors in several East Valley cities who design and construct within the governance of these codes are inaccurately being criticized as supportive of unnecessary government oversight and involvement in the building process. The updated versions of the codes themselves have been falsely demonized as voluminous, incomprehensible pages of government bureaucracy.
