Navajo Nation, Arizona House speakers question deregulation of electricity

The Arizona Speaker of the House Andy Tobin and Speaker of the Navajo Nation Council Johnny Naize issued a joint statement on Tuesday expressing their “great concerns over the possible implementation of a restructured electric market in the state of Arizona” due to their “deep reverence for our mutual commitment to our respective elected institutions and the people they represent.” The Arizona Corporation Commission will be considering the deregulation of electricity at a public meeting as early as late September.

Supporters say the deregulation would provide customers with more options allowing them to shop for electricity, however, opponents argue that it is only large corporations that will see any real benefit from the move. In other states, deregulation has led to an increase in rates for the average user.
