New group says electricity deregulation ‘risky’

The Yellow Sheet Report says he newly created Arizona Power Consumers Coalition has assembled a diverse group of people to help defeat efforts to open up the state’s system of regulated utilities to competition.

The group’s co-chairs are former legislator and now Navajo County Supervisor Sylvia Allen; Roc Arnett, president & CEO of the East Valley Partnership; former Sen. Lori Daniels; Lisa James, chair of the Dodie Londen Excellence in Public Service Series; former Rep. Russ Jones; Diane McCarthy, director of Business Partnerships and Government Affairs of West MEC; Kim Owens, executive director of Dodie Londen; Navajo Supervisor David Tenney; and Phil Townsend, former chairman of the Yuma County Republican Party.

Jones said he fears losing that connection if out-of-state firms are allowed to compete here. “I think messing with that for a possible benefit is something that is very, very risky,” he said, adding, “I am very, very leery of just opening this up. It could be greater by ten times than the alt-fuels debacle from 10 years ago.”
