Building permits for single-family homes were up significantly in both the city of Flagstaff and Coconino County in the fiscal year just ended June 30.

The city issued 185 single-family permits — including units in townhouse complexes — last fiscal year compared with 63 in FY 2012, nearly a tripling.

In unincorporated Coconino County, permits went from 55 two years ago to 79 during the past fiscal year.

With the local economy con- tinuing to recover, applications for building permits are expected to rise, including 30 new homes in the next phase of the Presidio project in west Flagstaff.

The Flagstaff building department has seen a big increase in permits issued for larger residences, said Michael Scheu, building inspection manager for the city.

Meanwhile, Resale home inventory is down, foreclosures have dropped, lending is loosening, and so it’s leading to an increased demand for new home construction, said David Anderson, sales manager for Capstone Homes, a large local builder.
