Renzi asks judge to reverse his convictions

Lawyers for former U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi have asked a judge to reverse the former congressman’s convictions a month ago on public corruption, money laundering and other charges, AP reports.

Defense attorneys asked U.S. District Judge David Bury on Wednesday to either acquit Renzi on his convictions or call a new trial.Renzi

They say, in part, that the evidence wasn’t enough to back up the jury’s verdict and relevant evidence was excluded at trial.

He was accused of using his office for personal financial gain and looting a family insurance business to help pay for his 2002 campaign.

Renzi represented Arizona’s sprawling 1st Congressional District from early 2003 until early 2009.

He chose not to run for re-election in 2008 while facing the federal indictment.

His sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 16.
