Senate nears first big energy bill since 2007

The Senate gears up for a chance to pass its first substantive energy bill since 2007 as energy efficiency legislation heads to the upper chamber’s floor.

Or maybe not.

Co-sponsors Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio) are still busy working to cut a deal on amendments.

Their bill would authorize an array of measures to encourage energy conservation by homeowners, manufacturers, businesses and the federal government.

Shaheen and Portman are trying to keep controversial measures off the bill.

But Republicans want to push a provision to green light the Keystone XL oil sands pipeline.
