Homebuilding is rebounding across the Southeast Valley, especially on the fringes in northern Pinal County, but builders fear that the recovery could stall because of a labor shortage, a residual effect of the Great Recession.
“The concern is we’re going to reach a ceiling in the not-too-distant future in how many homes could be built without any changes in the labor market,” said Jackson Moll, deputy director of municipal affairs at the Home Builders Association of Central Arizona.
But for now, homebuilding is under way, especially in the hot spot of Queen Creek, where permits through May were up 119 percent compared with the same time a year ago.
“We’re at the leading edge of the development of new housing products,” said Chris Anaradian, Queen Creek director of development services. “So many projects are going on here.”
Single-family home permits across the region since 2012 show a comeback from the Great Recession.
