Large Utah based solar company skips Arizona because of uncertainty over net metering

Attacks on net metering policy in Arizona have had a chilling effect that prevented one of the largest residential solar installers in the US from entering the market, according to a top executive at the company.

Brendon Merkley, chief operating officer at Vivint Solar, a subsidiary of the home security company, said that he had raised concerns at a meeting with the Arizona governor’s office and had to cancel plans to lease operating facilities in the state.

“I told the governor’s office that the rhetoric from the Arizona Corporation Commission means deferred investment from my company in the state,” he said. “I had a letter of intent on a lease on a couple of operating facilities in Arizona and I cancelled those leases. I didn’t invest in the state because of that rhetoric.”
