As Glendale City Manager Brenda Fischer starts her third week on the job, her agenda is packed with problems to solve.
Fischer left her city-manager post in Maricopa to help guide a city in the midst of an external audit over misused funds and to balance a cash-strapped budget that
could shutter a fire station.
She takes charge after city leaders approved a controversial deal to keep the Phoenix Coyotes in Glendale. Plus, she has to catch up on Glendale’s ongoing legal battle to stop the Tohono O’odham Nation from opening a casino near the Westgate Entertainment District.
If that wasn’t enough, Fischer’s had to immediately handle a touchy personnel matter. Last week, she had to weigh how the city should handle Assistant Police Chief Greg Dominguez, who was demoted by Chief Deborah Black for threatening a store clerk. A personnel oversight board recommended last week that he should get his job back.
