Chicago-based St. Xavier University, a Catholic school founded in 1846, plans to open a campus in downtown Gilbert, a move that would give the town its first higher-education institution.

St. Xavier hopes to open in Gilbert’s historical Heritage District by January 2015, although the university is still seeking an endorsement from Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix, The Arizona Republic has learned.

The Gilbert Town Council likely will review a development agreement next month for the university site, and St. Xavier will seek licensing for its programs through state agencies, officials said.

Details on the size of St. Xavier’s Gilbert campus, along with an exact location, should be available when the finalized development plan comes forward, officials said.
