Attorneys representing Arizona’s redistricting commission squared off in court Tuesday with attorneys representing Commissioner Richard Stertz, over whether he should remain a party to a Republican-led lawsuit aimed at redrawing the state’s congressional map.
The commission’s attorneys asked Maricopa County Superior Court judge Mark Brain to remove all five commissioners from the lawsuit as individuals. The attorneys contend the commission should be the official party in the suit, not the five individuals.
The lawsuit claims the commission did not adhere to the procedures laid out in the state Constitution during its 2011 district remapping process and drew maps more favorable to Democratic interests.
