Sen. Patrick Leahy is requesting the presence of U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Deputy James Cole at a Judiciary Committee hearing next month to discuss the ever-growing conflict between state and federal marijuana laws.
The Vermont Democrat, who chairs the committee, has long approached the Obama administration for clarification on how the conflicting laws should be handled, in light of the legalization of the drug for recreational use in Washington state and Colorado, and for medicinal purposes in twenty states including the District of Colombia.
According to a statement, Leahy wrote a letter to the Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy in December about the issue, questioning what assurances the administration can give to state officials in terms of not being penalized for obeying and carrying out state law.
