City officials are instituting a new policy designed to help locally based businesses win contracts for goods purchased by Surprise government.
The Local Vendor Preference Policy approved unanimously by the city council during its Aug. 13 business meeting is intended to enhance the prospects for a local company by automatically deducting 2.2 percent from its bid price for goods. The figure is equal to the city’s portion of the Transaction Privilege Tax, or sales tax consumers pay on purchased goods, noted Chief Financial Officer Bob Wingenroth.
“The purpose is to promote and retain local businesses and help job creation in Surprise,” Mr. Wingenroth told the council.
