Two weeks after Phoenix City Manager David Cavazos stunned City Hall with the announcement that he’s stepping down, insiders have begun the behind-the-scenes jockeying to determine the process for selecting his successor.
One of the central questions thus far has been the council’s timeline for hiring the next city manager. They could select a new hire this fall or wait until next year, when voters will elect at least two new council members during the upcoming elections. (No incumbent is running in two of the four districts holding contests.)
Councilman Tom Simplot, who’s not running for re-election, has been vocal about the need to postpone the decision until his District 4 successor takes office in January. He said the council should appoint an interim manager in the meantime.
