(News release)
Arizona State University fully endorses the City of Tempe’s Safe and Sober initiative and has deployed ASU police officers to assist in patrolling high traffic areas in the community.
Nationally, alcohol consumption remains a dominant public safety concern among the general public. New students arrive each year at college campuses across the country with well-established patterns of social behavior. ASU students are no exception. While a vast majority effectively manages their personal behavior successfully, some do struggle. ASU has a comprehensive array of substance abuse programs (https://eoss.asu.edu/wellness/drugs ) to deal with these issues.
The university also takes swift action in instances of student misconduct involving individuals or organizations. The recent incidents involving fraternities have resulted in groups being banned from the university or placed on probation. Individuals involved in serious cases of misbehavior have been dismissed.
A growing area of concern for ASU and the City of Tempe is the large number of commercially-built apartment buildings that have been specifically designed to attract students. ASU, in cooperation with the City, is working with these independently owned and operated establishments to insure a safe environment for our students and a less disruptive one for the adjacent neighborhoods.
Fraternity and sorority social programs that occur on or off campus must be registered in advance with the university. There will be a limit on social programs per chapter/semester and consequences for non-compliance.
Off-campus properties recognized as fraternal residences will be held to the same standards as on-campus groups.
Alcohol education for new students and student organizations will be broadened for all students through peer education and coordinated by student leadership, including a visible role for Greek chapter presidents.
Zero tolerance will be maintained for behavior incompatible with institutional standards and expectations. Regular chapter reviews will be conducted and incidents of misconduct will be subject to both fraternal peer review and judicial adjudication.
A broad range of proactive efforts are also underway to manage off-campus safety and conduct. The ASU Police Department coordinates “Meet Your Local Police” events involving Tempe, Mesa, Phoenix, Glendale and Gilbert police departments. In Tempe ASU Police officers continue to work the party patrol with the Tempe Police Department.
