Paying the household bills each month isn’t something most people want to dwell on too much. It’s like a kid facing vegetables they don’t like: don’t look too closely, hold your nose if you have to, and get it over with quick.
Consider an electricity bill. Even if you did want to dive into the details, it isn’t particularly easy to see exactly why your rates are what they are or how they’re being spent. It’s even harder to get a sense of what kinds of options or alternatives might be in your interests in terms of electricity in the years to come.
Enter the recently concluded debate over deregulating Arizona’s electricity sales, the idea of moving to a system where utilities compete with one another in an open market for customers rather than operating more or less as monopolies. Regardless how you feel about the outcome (regulators decided to pass on the idea), the debate itself proved illuminating. Here’s why:
