The Environmental Protection Agency is supporting a plan from Salt River Project and other owners of the Navajo Generating Station that could shut down one of the three generators at the plant near Page, likely signaling the plant will remain open.
Earlier this year, the EPA proposed a plan for the plant to comply with pollution regulations that likely would have required more than $1 billion in upgrades to the power plant.
SRP, on behalf of the power plant’s owners, responded with an alternate proposal that could achieve similar reductions in pollution without adding the new controls for several years.
The SRP plan could shut down one of the three generators to reflect the fact that utilities in California and Nevada are seeking to end their participation in the plant, part of a broader move away from coal generation in those states.
