The Mesa City Council appointed 25-year resident David Luna to serve as a council member from District 5, replacing Dina Higgins, who resigned in August.

Luna, the director of education television for Mesa Public Schools, was sworn into office Thursday morning and a formal ceremony is scheduled for the council’s regular meeting Sept. 23.

Luna was appointed over three other finalists for the vacant seat.

Luna will serve until the winner of the regular election Aug. 26, 2014, (or a runoff in November 2014) takes office in January 2015.
