Mesa considers building CNG fueling stations

Mesa is looking into whether it makes economic sense to go into the business of selling compressed natural gas for use in vehicle fleets.

The subject came up during a recent city council study session when Councilman Dave Richins asked whether the city had looked into whether eight small trucks that it is buying could have been equipped with CNG-burning engines.

Richins said the idea would make special sense for Mesa because the city owns a natural-gas company and would, in effect, be buying vehicle fuel from itself.

Pete Scarafiotti, who administers Mesa’s fleet services department, said the idea sounds good in theory, but has been slow to catch on in practice.
