A source close to Scott Smith said told the Yellow Sheet Report the mayor definitely will run for governor. “I would mortgage my house on it. Anyone who says otherwise doesn’t know Scott Smith,” the source said.
But the source said Smith would not have to resign as mayor for a while.
After Laws 2013, Chapter 159 (H2157: public declaration; resign to run) goes into effect next week, a “formal declaration of candidacy” will no longer trigger the resign-to-run statute. Instead, an elected official will only have to give up his office when he files nominating papers for another office.
Meanwhile, former Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman wouldn’t definitively say whether he’s considering abandoning his gubernatorial bid to run for attorney general or treasurer, but the former Tempe mayor said “many, many people” are trying to talk him into both races and he isn’t ruling anything out.
