Pinal County politicians are studying whether to scrap an internal audit team and hire contractors to root out corruption, fraud and waste in county government.
That team, the Office of Internal Audit, was created after the county’s worst-ever corruption scandal in hopes of preventing a recurrence.
In 2007, former county manager Stanley Griffis pleaded guilty to fraud and theft, was sentenced to 31/2 years in prison and ordered to pay more than $600,000 in restitution. The special prosecutor, Rick Romley, issued a series of recommendations to clean up the county government.
Chief among the recommendations was hiring auditors.
