Veteran Surprise councilman says he will resign; third this year to change hands

Veteran City Councilman Richard Alton said he intends to resign from the governing body, effective Nov. 4.

Mr. Alton, who made the announcement at Tuesday night’s council meeting, would mark the third change on the 7-member panel this year. Dist. 5 Councilman Mike Woodard resigned in May, and Dist. 4 Councilman Roy Villanueva died in late June. The resignation becomes official when Mr. Alton’s notice is filed with the City Clerk’s office. His current term expires Dec. 31, 2016.

The District 2 councilman noted he has served the municipality in some capacity for the past 8 years, the past 5 and a half on council.
