Stanfield resident Daisy Herrera is part of a team of students and faculty from Arizona State University and the University of New Mexico currently participating in the 2013 U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon.

The international competition challenges student teams from institutions of higher education to design, construct and operate solar-powered houses that are functional, energy efficient and attractive.

Herrera is studying for a bachelor’s degree in construction management at the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment with a minor in sustainability.

“The competition has been nothing but excitement and hard work,” Herrera said. “It is a monthlong competition. … We as a team worked 17-hour days trying to put our modular home together making sure it would be ready for the 10 contests that the judges will be evaluating throughout the competition.”

The team is one of 20 from across the globe competing in the biennial event, which started Oct. 3 and ends Sunday at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine, Calif.
