ARIZONA CITY — Fewer than 24 hours after the Arizona City Fire District board voted to remove Paul Sabel as fire chief, plans to recall the three board members who voted for the firing were launched, although that could not happen for nearly a year.
Board members Bill Bailey and Jim Leary, along with board Chairwoman Betty Harding, voted for the firing at Wednesday night’s meeting, which attracted close to 65 people, many of them apparently supporting Sabel.
After the 3-2 vote was taken, some members of the audience shouted that a recall attempt would start the next day.
On Thursday, those shouts turned to action as some residents drove to the Pinal County Recorder’s Office in Florence to pick up packets in order to begin the recall effort.
“There’s a lot of people out here who walked out of that meeting and their minds were totally on recall,” said John Trainor, who picked up a recall packet Thursday. (The public) “knows they have no effect on the board whatsoever. They are not working for the public. They are working for their own private interests and their own personal agenda.”
Trainor and his group will have to form a committee
