Bisbee planners debate solar installations in historic district

The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission met Thursday night to discuss how solar rooftop installations will affect the status of historic homes and local scenic views.

Commissioners were charged with amending the solar zoning ordinance by the city council after a commercial installation of large solar panels went up at The Gardens of Mile High Ranch on Tombstone Canyon in February last year. Neighboring property owners were upset with the large array, which they say interferes with the viewshed and the historic nature of Old Bisbee.

Commissioner Mark Apel noted that the commission has been working on the amendments for the past 18 months and he was leaning toward taking the matter to the public for input.
