More than a year after being declared dead, plans to build a gargantuan, world class resort in southeast Mesa have been resuscitated.
The Mesa City Council on Monday night is scheduled to extend — for the second time — deadlines for building a 1,200-room Gaylord hotel and a large conference center on the Eastmark property.
This time, it looks to be for real.
Eastmark, which covers 5 square miles of former General Motors land, is being developed as a mixed-use community by Scottsdale-based DMB Associates.
After buying the land in late 2006, DMB said it wanted to kick off the project with a world-class resort that would draw tourists and high-end businesses to areas near Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.
