Hollywood might make them look easy, or give a false impression about how frequently they happen. But malicious cybersecurity threats to utilities are real, and the Arizona Corporation Commission should adapt to that reality, cyber security experts said Oct. 3.
Doing so means commissioners need to be aware of the threats, vulnerabilities and consequences facing Arizona’s utility system, as well as what methods can be used to measure and manage risk on the cybersecurity front, asserted Miles Keogh and Christina Cody, research directors at the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC).
State-level regulators around the country have begun to incorporate cybersecurity risk management into their oversight of electric, water, gas and even transportation in some cases, the NARUC researchers explained.
