A former employee of the Pinal County Attorney’s Office negotiated a $100,000 settlement and got a new job after he sued the Attorney’s Office and the county for wrongful termination.
James McCormack was the chief investigator at the office and was terminated, along with many others in the department, shortly after County Attorney Lando Voyles took office Dec. 29.
Voyles fired about 25 percent of the employees in his department starting New Year’s Eve and continuing into the following week in what became known in the legal community as the “Pinal County Massacre.”
McCormack, a merit-protected employee, filed a $535,000 suit against Voyles and Pinal County.
A merit-protected employee has to be fired for cause, unlike an at-will employee, who can be terminated for no reason.
