Gilbert is poised to play a key role in one of the biggest decisions in the history of Arizona transportation.
The Arizona Department of Transportation this fall will begin seeking public feedback on the route of a potential passenger rail line between Phoenix and Tucson.
The outcome could put Gilbert in the heart of that vital transit link. It also could play a major part in development at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport on Gilbert’s eastern doorstep. Gilbert, along with several Valley cities, has a governing interest in the airport.
The possibilities for Gilbert emerged during a recent study session of the Mesa City Council.
The council was talking for the most part about updating Mesa’s own transit plan. But it turns out that what happens in Gilbert will play a key role in how Mesa shapes its future transportation corridors, both for light rail and buses.
