The Scottsdale City Council has approved a contract to begin construction of a two-building, low-income apartment complex on Belleview Street in the southern part of the city.
At its Tuesday, Oct. 22 meeting, the council voted 4-3 to approve a $636,966 construction contract with Habitat for Humanity of Central Arizona to rebuild two aging apartment buildings, at 7220 and 7224 E. Belleview St.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has asked Scottsdale to either repay $825,000 in federal grant money, the result of a failed project to revamp the properties, or show that the structures have been rebuilt and occupied as affordable housing.
