Scottsdale plans to present evidence against a lawsuit that accuses the city of illegally subsidizing improvements at TPC Scottsdale, home of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the city attorney said.
On Oct. 22, Scottsdale residents Mark Stuart and John Washington filed a lawsuit in Maricopa County Superior Court, accusing Scottsdale of “lavishing the tournament and the TPC with millions of dollars in new freebies paid for by hardworking city taxpayers.” The lawsuit states that Scottsdale will invest $20 million or more on the improvements. In return, the city will receive less than $4 million, it says.
The suit accuses Scottsdale of violating provisions in the Arizona Constitution and the City Charter that restrict gifting taxpayer dollars to private entities.
