Scottsdale will defend agreement to fund TPC golf upgrades

Scottsdale plans to present evidence against a lawsuit that accuses the city of illegally subsidizing improvements at TPC Scottsdale, home of the Waste Man­agement Phoenix Open, the city attorney said.

On Oct. 22, Scottsdale residents Mark Stuart and John Washington filed a law­suit in Maricopa County Superior Court, accusing Scottsdale of “lavishing the tournament and the TPC with millions of dollars in new freebies paid for by hard­working city taxpayers.” The lawsuit states that Scottsdale will invest $20 million or more on the im­provements. In return, the city will re­ceive less than $4 million, it says.

The suit accuses Scottsdale of violat­ing provisions in the Arizona Constitu­tion and the City Charter that restrict gifting taxpayer dollars to private enti­ties.
