Cave Creek backs off name battle with Scottsdale, comes up with own motto

Cave CreekBy Philip Haldiman | The Republic | azcentral.com

Cave Creek has decided not to adopt Scottsdale’s motto, the West’s Most Western Town, as its own.

On Monday night, the Town Council instead voted to approve the motto “Where the Wild West Lives.”

Cave Creek leaders had playfully challenged Scottsdale’s rights to the “Most Western” title, prompting threats of legal action over the 66-year-old motto, which has been trademarked with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office since 2007.

A quick-draw shootout contest was among the challenges to Scottsdale City Council members in the run-up to Cave Creek’s annual Western event Wild West Days, held last weekend.

Scottsdale leaders rebuffed the challenges before the city finally suggested legal action was possible if Cave Creek approved a resolution to move forward with usurping Scottsdale’s motto.
