City of Mesa to alter zoning code to permit short-term vacation home rentals

Using your Mesa home as a vacation rental for a day, a weekend or fewer than 29 days a year may soon be permitted with a use permit as discussed last week by the Mesa Planning and Zoning Board.

The board voted 5-1 Nov. 20 to recommend that the Mesa City Council approve a zoning code addition so vacation homes would be a permitted land use or activity – subject to approval of an administrative use permit – in the single- and multiple-residence districts.

Anyone with two or more homes being used as vacation rentals in the state of Arizona would be affected by the change, the P&Z board was told.

“One could be in Mesa and one could be in Sedona,” Gordon Sheffield, city of Mesa zoning/civil hearing administrator, said at a study session Nov. 20.
