The Gilbert Town Council next week finally may be ready to adopt updated building codes after opposition from conservative activists and local contractors convinced the group to delay approval in August.
Council members last week declined to set up a formal advisory board to study the codes further and instead directed town officials to bring them back for a vote on Thursday, Nov. 7.

The council likely will approve most of the regulations while assigning an informal group, including local business organizations and residents, to review a list of two- or three-dozen items considered by some to be more controversial.
