Land swap proposed to continue Grand Ave. improvements

The Glendale City Council is expected to vote in the coming months on swapping land to continue Grand Avenue improvements, which have packed the thoroughfare with orange cones and construction crews for years.

Under the deal, Glendale would give the Arizona Department of Transportation roughly 3.3 acres of right-of-way strips along Glendale’s stretch of Grand Avenue to continue to streamline access to the road by reducing driveways, building barriers and improving landscapes and sidewalks. The city has spent nearly $656,170 buying up right-of-way land for the project.

ADOT plans to close 76 excess driveways along Glendale’s section and 52 along Phoenix’s portion of Grand, ADOT spokesman Doug Nintzel said.
