[LETTER TO THE EDITOR] Solar customer wants his $5 back

five_dollar_billFrom Kevin Hengehold to East Valley Tribune

At the Corporation Commission hearings (last) week, I saw dozens of APS solar customers stand up and present their monthly bills, showing exactly how much they pay to support the grid. And on Tuesday, APS finally admitted that solar customers on average pay $71 a month — twice what I pay for my apartment.

Meanwhile, not a single non-solar customer could present a bill showing the cost shift borne by their choice not to go solar. Indeed, the supposed “cost shift” could only be borne out in hypothetical and deeply flawed models.

I’ve seen lots of news stories saying the solar industry “won” this battle. When someone steals $5 from me instead of $50, I don’t declare what a victory I’ve achieved — I demand my $5 back. I hope the solar industry will do the same.
