Grand Canyon University plans to nearly double its enrollment in the next three years, requiring the private Christian school to expand into the surrounding neighborhood. And so far, it has met with mixed results from neighbors.
The university was once an obscure liberal-arts school in west Phoenix before a 2004 sale to Significant Education made it the country’s first Christian forprofit university.
The university is now a Division I school with plans for a new campus in the Southeast Valley and more than 40,000 students, including its online programs.
Part of its expansion includes plans to enroll about 15,000 students at the main campus in Phoenix in the next three to four years. The main campus now has about 8,500 students.
Although some neighbors welcome the change, some believe the school’s growth may not be best for the area around 33rd Avenue and Camelback Road.
