More than 100 people gathered at a historic Princeton, N.J., estate last month. The owner, Avril Moore, greeted local real-estate agents, friends, neighbors and strangers as they milled about the first floor of the 240-year-old house. Then, after 11 minutes of bidding, one of these visitors became the new owner of Ms. Moore’s five-bedroom home.

In October, 1,016 homes were listed for auction. That number is double compared with a year earlier, according to listings site HomeFinder.com. Still, auctions comprised less than 1% of total listings, according to HomeFinder.
