“ We are very proud of the new facilities, not only for our firefighters, but for the community we have been entrusted to protect. The new station is in a much more tactically advantageous location near the Banner Ironwood Medical Center,” Rural/Metro Fire Chief Ted Beam said in a press release.
Prior to its relocation, the fire station had been housed for four years in a trailer tucked behind a business at 1532 W. Meridian Road, Colin Williams, public information officer for the fire department, said during an interview last week.
The new 5,500-square-foot, one-story building houses a fire engine and water tender truck, as well as individual sleeping quarters for its four-person fire department crew and a two-person crew from Southwest Ambulance, Mr. Williams said.
It also has offices for the fire captain and battalion chief, a large kitchen, a day room and outdoor barbecue area, he said.
A 6-foot-wide Rural/Metro logo is painted on the apparatus bay wall, Mr. Williams said.
The building was constructed as office space and has sat empty, Mr. Williams said. Rural/Metro is leasing it from its owner, T.H.-Stratman, the company that built it.
